REFLEXÕES SOBRE O CONCEITO DE EXISTIMATIO EM PEDRO ABELARDO

Resumo

Pedro Abelardo (1079-1142) é condenado no Concílio de Sens em 1140 sob a acusação de que as teses extraídas de seus escritos eram supostamente contrárias à fé. Isso pode ter sido atribuído devido à interpretação pouco compreensível que o autor fez em sua Introductio ad Theologiam, declarando que “fé é a estimativa (opinião) das coisas não aparentes.” (fides est existimatio rerum non apparentium). Abelardo, pertencente à tradição escolástica, teve influência da lógica aristotélica e neoplatônica tanto em seus escritos filosóficos quanto teológicos. A disputa travada no Concílio de Sens entre Abelardo e as Autoridades da Igreja, principalmente São Bernardo de Clairvaux (1090-1153), girou em torno do significado lógico do termo existimatio. Além do significado lógico, existe a possibilidade de um significado ético, e este é determinante no modo como concebeu a fé.

Reflections About The Concept Of Existimatio In Peter Abelard

Abstract: Peter Abelard (1079-1142) is condemned at the Council of Sens in 1140 on charges that thesis extracted from his writings were alleged contrary to faith. This could be attributed to the not so comprehensible interpretation made by the author in his work Introductio ad Theologiam, declaring that “faith is the estimation (opinion) of non apparent things.” (fides est existimatio rerum non apparentium). Abelard, pertaining to the scholastic tradition, was influenced by aristotelian and neoplatonic logic both in his philosophical and theological writings. The dispute at the Council of Sens waged between Abelard and the Authorities of the Church, especially Saint Bernard of Clairvaux (1090-1153), revolved around the logical meaning of the term existimatio. Besides the logical meaning, there is a possibility of an ethical meaning, and this is determining in the way he conceived faith.
