SACERDÓCIO ISRAELITA NO ANTIGO TESTAMENTO

Resumo

Após a exposição das diferentes etimologias do termo hebraico “kohén”, sacerdote, segue a abordagem das várias atribuições do sacerdote israelita no Antigo Testamento. Estas são essencialmente exercidas nos santuários. Nestes lugares sagrados o povo expunha seus problemas ao sacerdote israelita. Ele responde com o oráculo divino. Sua função de mediador entre o povo e Deus e vice e versa, ele expressava especialmente na oferenda de sacrifícios e através do pedido das bênçãos de Deus. O eixo integrador destas várias funções sacerdotais é sua santidade pessoal. Esta é definida como a separação do mundo profano. Nisto consiste o sucesso de sua mediação.

ISRAELITE PRIESTHOOD IN THE OLD TESTAMENT

Abstract: After an exposition of the different etymologies of the Hebrew word for priest, “kohén”, the author developes the various aspects that the Israelite priesthood as presented in the Old Testament. This priesthood was essencially exercised in sanctuaries. In this holy places the people expressed their problems to the Israelite priest whose response was received as a divine oracle. The priest functioned as mediator between the people and God and vice-versa. This mediation was expressed specially in the offering of sacrifices and through petition for God’s blessings. The integrating and pivotal element in the various priestly functions was personal holiness. This is defined as being separated from the profane word. Successful mediation depended upon this holiness and hence this separation.
